I’ve been sharing air fryer recipes since the early days in 2016, and I don’t play about seafood. Crab cakes should taste like crab, not breadcrumbs. This method gives you a crisp exterior and a juicy inside without drying them out. These air fryer crab cakes are for folks who want real crab flavor, a perfect crisp edge, and seasoned so every bite hits.

Air Fryer Crab Cakes Ingredients

  • Crab Meat: I prefer to use jumbo lump crab meat. You can use any real crab meat. Crab meat can be found in the refrigerated aisle of the grocery store. Sometimes you will have to ask the butcher for it. I do not recommend imitation crab or canned crab.
  • Olive Oil
  • Old Bay Seasoning
  • Breadcrumbs
  • Bell Peppers
  • Egg
  • Flour
  • Mayo
  • Lemon Juice

How to Make Air Fryer Crab Cakes

Detailed measurements and full instructions can be found in the recipe card at the bottom of this post.

  1. Prep the mix and build the binder: Combine bell peppers, crab meat, egg, mayo, lemon juice, and Old Bay Seasoning to a bowl. Stir gently to combine.
  2. Add dry ingredients: Sprinkle in breadcrumbs, mix just until the mixture holds together. Don’t overmix or the crab cakes will be dense instead of tender.
  3. Form the crab cakes: Shape the mixture into patties about ½ to ¾ inch thick. If the mixture feels too wet, add a bit more breadcrumbs. If it’s too dry, a small spoon of mayo helps. Sprinkle flour on top.
  4. Prep for air frying: Brush or spray both sides lightly with olive oil. This helps them get golden and crisp.
  5. Air fry: Air fry the crab cakes until golden brown and heated through.
  6. Serve: Finish with a squeeze of lemon juice and serve hot.

Frequently Asked Questions and Recipe Pro Tips

What type of crab meat works best?

Jumbo lump or lump crab meat is best for flavor and texture. It gives you those nice chunks of crab. Claw meat works too but is softer. I don’t recommend imitation or canned if you want real crab cake flavor.

How long do crab cakes take to air fry?

Seafood cooks fast. They will take around 10 minutes.

What temperature works best?

I recommend 370 degrees.

Can I use canned crab meat?

A lot of lump crab meat comes in a can and is great to use. Read the label to be sure it's real crab meat.

How do I keep crab cakes from falling apart?

You can try chilling the patties for 20 minutes prior to air frying if you have trouble. If the crab cakes are too dry, use a little more egg. If they are too moist, add more breadcrumbs.

Why are my crab cakes dry?

Usually too many breadcrumbs or overcooking. Crab cakes should be moist and tender inside, not crumbly.

Do I need to spray them with oil?

A light spray or brush of oil helps them get golden and crisp. Don’t skip it.

Can I make them ahead of time?

Yes. Form the patties and keep them covered in the fridge up to a day ahead. Cook when ready.

Can I freeze crab cakes?

Yes. Freeze them uncooked or cooked. Thaw in the fridge before air frying for best texture.

Freezer Tips

You can freeze these up to 3 months. Reheat in the air fryer at 370 degrees for 6-8 minutes until warm.

I was so happy to see you posted a recipe for crab cakes in the air fryer! Sadly, we do not eat whole wheat bread crumbs (we eat no grain products at all) - so I wonder if you think pork rind dust/flour would be good as a substitute. I really don't want to ruin a batch of lump crab meat. Thanks!
