Popsicle Mold

You will need a popsicle mold for the recipe. I use this mold from Amazon.

What Type of Sweetener or Sugar to Use

Sweetener or sugar is optional and should be used in accordance with your preferences. If you like sweet margaritas, definitely add sweetener. If you prefer salty margaritas, consider adding salt instead.

How to Make Margarita Popsicles

Detailed measurements and full instructions can be found in the recipe card at the bottom of this post.

  1. Combine tequila, orange juice, and freshly squeezed juice from the limes in a blender.
  2. The mixture will become somewhat foamy. Pour the mixture into the popsicle mold.
  3. Add the strawberry slices to the mold with the liquid.
  4. Freeze.

How Long to Freeze Them

The margarita popsicles will take at least 6 hours to freeze, or overnight. If you're in a hurry, you can speed up the freezing process by placing the popsicle molds in the freezer for a few minutes before pouring in the mixture. This will save some time, but not a ton.

How to Remove the Popsicles from the Mold

Make sure the popsicles are completely frozen before attempting to remove them from the mold. Run warm water over the outside of the mold to loosen the popsicles before trying to remove them.

How to Store

You can store margarita popsicles in the freezer for up to 3 months. Just be sure to wrap them tightly in plastic wrap or foil to prevent them from freezer burn.

How to Substitute Orange Juice

You can use any of your favorite juice. You can also use fresh lemon or lime juice to replace it.

Alcohol Substitutions

You can use any type of alcohol that you like in your margarita popsicles. Tequila is the traditional choice, but you can also use vodka, rum, or even beer. Just be sure to use a type of alcohol that has a good flavor and that will freeze well.

Can You Use Bottled Lime Juice

Sure, you can if you want. I’m not a fan of the taste, so I don’t buy it. Bottled lime juice is a product made from freshly squeezed lime juice that has been pasteurized and packaged in bottles for convenience and extended shelf life.

Additional Flavors and Substitutions

  • Mango
  • Watermelon
  • Pineapple
  • Peach

Equipment

  • Popsicle Mold

Ingredients

  • 1 cup tequila
  • ½ cup orange juice
  • ½-3/4 cup fresh lime juice This was 6 limes for me; adjust to suit your taste
  • sweetener, sugar or salt (optional) Add sugar or salt and taste repeatedly. I did not use any sugar or salt, as preference.
  • 10-15 sliced strawberries

Instructions

  • Combine the tequila, orange juice, and freshly squeezed juice from the limes in a blender.
  • The mixture will become somewhat foamy. Pour the mixture into the popsicle mold. Do not fill the molds to the top. You will need room for the fruit.
  • Add the strawberry slices to the mold with the liquid. You may have to use a knife or popsicle stick to press the fruit down into the mold.
  • If you still have room at the top of the popsicle add in more of the mixture. If you have run out of margarita mixture, top off the molds with juice or tequila.
  • Freeze for two hours.
  • Remove the mold from the freezer and add the popsicle sticks to each. The mixture should be slushy.
  • Freeze for an additional 6-8 hours. I did overnight.
  • Remove the mold from the freezer and run hot water on the side of each individual mold for ten seconds. This will loosen the popsicles.
  • Remove the popsicles and serve immediately.

Notes

When tequila freezes it becomes creamy. These popsicles will not have a hard texture once removed from the mold. I recommend serving immediately and/or using wine glasses to hold them as they are consumed. They will melt similar to how a frozen margarita does.
If you are going to add sugar or salt, I recommend adding it before you blend the ingredients. Taste the mixture after blending so that you can determine if you need more. Start small with a teaspoon. Work your way up from there.
These popsicles are so easy to make once you have the right mold. The mold above comes with a blue lid that you can place on top. I did not use the lid. I feared the lid would freeze on top. I didn't want to have to resort to running hot water over the top to remove the lid and potentially ruining the popsicles. I placed the mold without the lid on a flat surface in my freezer.
