When it comes to barbecue anything I like to think I know a thing or two about it since I live in Kansas City, Missouri.

The great thing about these wings are they can be baked or air fried if you are looking for fried wings.

Honey BBQ Sauce Ingredients

Grab you favorite BBQ Sauce or you can make your own using my Keto Low-Carb BBQ Sauce recipe, along with ½ cup of honey.

How to Make Honey BBQ Wings in the Oven

  1. Season the chicken wings and bread with flour.
  2. Line a sheet pan with parchment paper and add the wings to the pan.
  3. Bake for 20 minutes and then flip the wings.
  4. Bake for an additional 15-20 minutes.
  5. Mix the honey and bbq sauce together in a bowl or mixing cup.
  6. Remove the chicken and place it in a large bowl. Drizzle the honey bbq sauce throughout.
  7. Place the coated chicken back onto the sheet pan and bake for an additional 5 minutes

Air Fryer Instructions

  1. Season the chicken wings. Bread the chicken wings with flour.
  2. Spray the chicken wings with cooking oil.
  3. Cook the wings in the air fryer on 400 degrees.
  4. I like to cook the chicken wings for 15-22 minutes. Each air fryer brand is different. You will have to use your judgment to determine the best timing that will work for you.

How to Make the Sauce Stick to the Wings

To get the sauce to stick, you will need to drizzle it over the chicken wings once they have pretty much fully baked. Then return the wings to the oven to soak in all of the sauce.

How to Keep the Wings Crispy

Breading the wings with flour and properly applying oil will help the wings crisp. If you see visible areas of flour on the wings after air frying or baking, spray more oil and allow them to cook a little longer.

Can You Use Frozen Wings?

Thawed wings will work best for this recipe. You will have trouble getting the breading and seasoning to stick to wings if they are frozen.

If you do cook from frozen, bake or air fry them for half of the cooking time noted. Remove the wings, and then apply the breading and seasonings. Return the wings to the oven.

Monitor the wings to ensure they reach an internal temperature of 165 degrees. Your cook time will vary so use a meat thermometer.

Ingredients

  • 1 pound chicken drummettes (party wings) You can use full wings if you wish.
  • McCormick's Grill Mates Chicken Seasoning to taste
  • salt and pepper to taste
  • ¼ cup all-purpose flour
  • ½ cup BBQ sauce
  • ¼ cup honey
  • cooking oil I use olive oil and this is for the air fryer method.

Instructions

Baked Wings

  • Preheat oven to 375 degrees.
  • Season the chicken wings with the chicken seasoning, salt, and pepper to taste.
  • Coat the chicken in flour.
  • Line a sheet pan with parchment paper and add the wings to the pan.
  • Bake for 20 minutes and then flip the wings.
  • Bake for an additional 15-20 minutes.
  • Mix the honey and bbq sauce together in a bowl or mixing cup.
  • Remove the chicken and place it in a large bowl. Drizzle the honey bbq sauce throughout.
  • Place the coated chicken back onto the sheet pan and bake for an additional 5 minutes. Ensure the chicken has reached an internal temperature of 165 degrees. Use a meat thermometer.

Air Fryer Wings

  • Season the chicken wings with the chicken seasoning, salt, and pepper to taste. I like to do this inside ziploc bags to ensure the chicken is evenly coated.
  • Coat the chicken in flour. I do this inside the plastic bag.
  • Spray the air fryer basket with cooking oil. I like to use olive oil.
  • Add the chicken to the basket. Spray both sides with cooking oil. The floury exterior on the chicken should go away when you spray it with oil.
  • Cook for 8 minutes on 400 degrees. Do not overcrowd the air fryer basket. Cook in batches if needed.
  • Open the air fryer and flip the chicken. Cook for an additional 7 minutes.
  • Mix the honey and bbq sauce together in a bowl or mixing cup.
  • Remove the chicken and place it in a large bowl. Drizzle the honey bbq sauce throughout.
  • Place the chicken back in the air fryer. Cook for an additional 5 minutes on 400 degrees. Every air fryer brand is different and cook time will vary. Use your judgment. Cook until the honey bbq sauce has dried and crisped. Ensure the chicken has reached an internal temperature of 165 degrees. Use a meat thermometer.

Notes

  • You can make your own chicken seasoning using ¼ teaspoon of the following: onion powder, paprika, black pepper, and sage.  You can also simply use salt and pepper.

I love this recipe it looks very easy but I have a question. When you use frozen chicken wings, does the seasoning cover the wings well enough?? I would prefer to grab my wings out of the freezer and start the recipe on a moments notice but I am a bit concerned that the flower and the other seaso may not adhere to his wings.

Hi there, if you cook from frozen the seasoning and flour will not adhere. I recommend thawing them first.

I cooked these wings for a Saturday night dinner, this was my first time using my air fryer for chicken wings. I can say that these wings were a hit, I also put them in the oven to keep them warm that made them twice as good for the sauce to really stick to the wings and your finger. Thanks for this wonderful recipe.

This recipe is fool proof. These came out delicious, and took no time to throw together. I subbed a GF flour for all-purpose (which required a little extra oil spritz) and baked in the oven. From now on this is my go to for preparing wings, I won’t bother with any other recipe. Thank you Brandi!

Made these tonight and they were delicious as always. Funny story. I forgot what temp to put the air fryer on; so the BF referred me to general temps on the front of our air fryer. My response “ oh no hun, I have to get the gospel according to Brandi out to get the perfect temp “ 🤣🤣🤣. My family loves every single recipe we have tried from you. Thank you for putting the work in so, I don’t have to.

A new favorite wing recipe. We’ve always seasoned our wings in the past before cooking, but never thought of the addition of poultry seasoning. It added another layer of flavor that complimented the use of sugar-free bbq sauce and honey. What made this recipe stand out even more was the inclusion of instructions right there to make more poultry seasoning. I had used all of mine up making the wings and while they were cooking—I made more!!!

These are so good, I made these twice in the last week! My husband and I both agree these are better than Buffalo Wild Wings and rival some of the non-chain wing places we love. We used the same seasoning and cooking method and switched up the sauces, too, and every one was delicious!
