These Air Fryer Wontons are exactly why I keep telling y’all the air fryer can do way more than reheat leftovers. The wrappers turn golden and crispy without deep frying, while the filling stays tender and flavorful inside. I’ve been air frying since 2017, and the key with wontons is a light coating of oil and enough space for that hot air to circulate. I've done the testing for you!

Ingredients

  • 6 oz cream cheese Softened at room temperature
  • 2 green onions finely chopped
  • 1 teaspoon sweetener or sugar
  • 1 teaspoon dried chives You can use fresh, minced if you wish
  • 17-21 wonton wrappers
  • small bowl of water
  • cooking oil spray I use olive oil

Optional

  • ¼ cup crushed pineapple I used fresh, you can also use canned. You can add more than ¼ cup if you wish.

Instructions

  • Combine the cream cheese, green onions, sweetener, and chives in a medium bowl. If you are making pineapple wontons, add the wontons here as well. Stir well.
  • Grab your wonton wrapper and dip your fingers into the small bowl of water and then use your wet fingers to line the 4 edges of the wonton wrapper. You can also use a cooking brush. Depending on the brand of wonton wrappers you use, you may want to consider double wrapping, if they are extremely thing.
  • Add 1 teaspoon to 1 ½ teaspoons of filling to the middle of the wrapper. Do not overfill, the filling will leak from the wonton. Smooth the filling with a spoon or spatula.
  • Seal the wrapper diagonally to create a triangle shape. Ensure the edges are moist. This will keep the wrapper sealed. You can also fold them in a rectangluar shape.
  • Spray cooking oil in the air fryer basket. Load the wontons in the basket and spritz with oil. Don't overcrowd the air fryer basket.
  • Air fry on 370 degrees. Cook for 8-10 minutes. I did not flip the wontons. Each air fryer brand will cook at varying speeds. Check-in on the wontons and fry them to your desired level of crisp.

Video

Notes

  • I usually see wonton wrappers in the refrigerated section of the grocery store near produce.
  • If you notice white dusting on the air fryer wrappers, you can spritz those areas with oil, or coat them with an egg wash.
  • I usually make a batch of ½ savory and ½ with pineapples using ¼ cup of pineapple. Feel free to double that if making full batch with pineapple.

Frequently Asked Questions and Recipe Pro Tips

How do I fold wontons?

Triangle: Fold the wrapper in half to form a triangle.

Rectangle: Fold the wrapper in half to form a rectangle.

Rectangular Ignot: Fold the wrapper in half to form a rectangle. Pull down on the two lower corners of the wonton and seal the corners together.

What temperature works best for air frying wontons?

I recommend 370 degrees.

How long do wontons take to air fry?

The wontons will need 7-10 minutes of cook time. Each air fryer brand will cook at varying speeds. Check-in on the wontons and fry them to your desired level of crisp.

How do I keep wontons crispy?

Reheating them in the air fryer does the trick. After being sealed away and stored, they will soften some. You can reheat them in the air fryer, maybe add a spritz of oil if necessary.

How do I cook frozen wontons?

Store-bought, frozen can be cooked on 400 degrees for 8-10 minutes.

Do I need to spray wontons with oil before air frying?

I recommend it. Without oil, wonton wrappers can turn dry and hard instead of crisp and golden. Lightly spray both sides with cooking oil.

Why are my air fryer wontons dry and hard?

They were likely cooked too long or didn't have enough oil on the wrappers. Wonton wrappers are thin, honey. They don't need forever in the air fryer.

How do I keep wontons from opening in the air fryer?

Don't overfill them, and make sure you seal the edges really well. Moisten the edges with water, press out any excess air around the filling, and firmly pinch them closed.

How much filling should I put in each wonton?

Don't get greedy with the filling. 😂 About a teaspoon is usually plenty, depending on the size of your wrappers. Overstuffed wontons are much harder to seal and more likely to burst while cooking.

Can I stack wontons in the air fryer?

I don't recommend it. Arrange them in a single layer with a little space between each one so the hot air can circulate. Overcrowding is how you end up with some crispy wontons and some sad, pale ones.

How do I know when the wontons are done?

The wrappers should be crisp and golden, and the filling should be completely cooked through. If you're using raw meat in the filling, use a meat thermometer to ensure it reaches a safe internal temperature.

How to Freeze Air Fryer Wontons for Later

Store them in sealable bags or a tightly sealed container for up to a few months. Reheat the wontons from frozen in the air fryer on 350 degrees for 3-4 minutes or until warm.

Thank you for another delicious recipe. I made the savory ones and they were so easy and fast to make. My question is re the meat filled ones. Do you have a recipe for those? Like what seasonings to use and if the meat needs to be cooked first? Ty.

I love how easy and delicious these were! Wontons/crab Rangoons are my favorite thing to get when ordering Chinese but they are always so greasy. These are super easy, tastier, and cheaper to make at home! My air fryer must run hot because I ended up having to turn the temp down to 350° so they didn’t get too crispy.

HELP. I usually fry my wontons in oil so decided to try the oven air fryer. After about 6 minutes the smoke alarm went off and the kitchen was filled with smoke. I have used the air fryer many times and this is the first time this happened. My wontons are filled with hamburger, bean sprouts, water chestnuts and green onions. What did I do wrong?
