If you’ve never made a piña colada in the Ninja Slushi machine… you’re in for a treat. This drink is cold, creamy, and tastes like you’re on a beach somewhere with no responsibilities. It’s got sweet pineapple juice, creamy coconut, a splash of rum, and that perfect slushy texture.

Key Ingredients

  • Pineapple Juice: This is the heart of the drink! It brings that bold, tropical flavor and natural sweetness that makes a piña colada taste like vacation.
  • Cream of Coconut: Not to be confused with coconut cream — this one is sweet and rich, and it gives the drink that classic creamy texture and coconut flavor. It’s what makes a piña colada a piña colada.
  • White Rum: Adds the boozy punch without overpowering the fruity flavors. White rum is smooth and blends right into the slush without changing the color or texture. You can also use Coconut rum (like Malibu), spiced rum, vodka, tequila blanco, or gin.
  • Water: Just a little helps the Ninja Slushi machine blend everything smoothly and prevents the drink from getting too thick or locking up the machine. It keeps that frozen texture just right.

Cream of Coconut vs Coconut Cream

Cream of coconut is sweetened and thick like syrup. It's used in cocktails like piña coladas, desserts, or sweet sauces. It often comes in a can or squeeze bottle.

Coconut cream is unsweetened, thick cream skimmed from the top of canned coconut milk. It's used in curries, soups, sauces, or vegan whipped cream. It comes in cans labeled “coconut cream” or just in full-fat coconut milk if you chill it and scoop off the top. It's rich and creamy, but it isn't a substitute for cream of coconut because it isn't sweet. You can try to sweeten it if you want to test out using it.

How to Fix Error Messages Related to Alcohol

If you've tried making a margarita, piña colada, or any frozen cocktail in this machine, you might have run into error messages, improper freezing, or inconsistent texture. Trust me, I understand. It happened to me several times when I created this recipe. Here’s why and how to fix it.

  • Alcohol Doesn’t Freeze Well – Since alcohol has a much lower freezing point than water, high-proof spirits can prevent proper slush formation. Too much alcohol in the mix can cause the machine to fail to shave properly or not dispense the slush at all.
  • Wrong Liquid Ratios – The Ninja Slushi Machine needs the right balance of water-based liquids and alcohol for proper freezing. Too little liquid = slushie won’t form. Too much liquid = the drink won’t get thick enough.
  • Thick Syrups & Juices Can Cause Issues – Using thick fruit juices, syrups, or creamy ingredients can make the machine work harder and sometimes lead to clumping or uneven freezing.
  • Overfilling the Machine – The Ninja Slushi Machine has a minimum and maximum fill line for a reason. Overfilling it can cause it to struggle with freezing and dispensing.

How to Make Perfect Frozen Cocktails in the Ninja Slushi Machine

If a drink exceeds the maximum alcohol, temperature control lights will flash one at a time in ascending order starting with the bottom LED, preset LEDs will flash, and the unit will beep every minute for 15 minutes. If this happens you need to add more water or something like sparkling water.

  • Stick to 1-1.5 oz alcohol per serving – Any more and the drink won’t freeze properly.
  • Dilute with extra water, juice, or mixer – Helps create a smooth, thick slush.
  • Use pre-chilled ingredients – This helps the machine freeze the mix faster and prevents melting.
  • Avoid thick syrups or creamy ingredients – If using, mix well with water or juice to thin them out.
  • Don’t overfill the machine – Stick to the fill line (64oz) for best results.

How to Make Ninja Slushi Piña Colada Slush

Detailed measurements and full instructions can be found in the recipe card at the bottom of this post.

  1. In a measuring cup or small pitcher, combine the water and coconut cream. This will make it easier to add the coconut cream to the machine.
  2. Add all of the ingredients to the Ninja Slushi Machine. Press the Spiked Slush button and let the machine shave and churn the mixture into a smooth, icy drink. Mine took a little less than 30 minutes.
  3. Dispense the pina colada slush into a glass.
