Traeger Smoked Sweet Potatoes

These Smoked Sweet Potatoes are drizzled in melted butter and served with brown sugar and/or cinnamon. If you like American-style yams, you will love these. This side can be made with any smoker or pellet Traeger grill.

These sweet potatoes will make the perfect side dish for any spread no matter the time of year. They are loaded with fiber and essential nutrients and are packed with immense flavor thanks to the smoker or pellet grill!

Picking Your Potatoes

Try to look for potatoes that are even and consistent in size. This will ensure they cook at a consistent temperature and are finished cooking around the same time.

Poking Holes

Poking holes in sweet potatoes is often a debated topic. Growing up I learned to do it when microwaving to help the interior steam release and prevent them for exploding.

I still poke holes in mine while smoking and baking them. It allows them to breathe. I also feel comfort in knowing they aren't likely to explode while I leave them unattended for hours on the smoker.

Do what you feel works for you.

How to Season Them

Rub the sweet potatoes in olive oil first for crispy skin. After the sweet potatoes have cooked I like to add salt, butter, and brown sugar or sweetener to them. Here are more ideas:

  • Garlic
  • Rosemary
  • Thyme
  • Coconut
  • Chili Powder

How to Make Traeger Smoked Sweet Potatoes

  1. Rub olive oil onto both sides of the sweet potatoes.
  2. Place the sweet potatoes on the smoker.
  3. Smoke.

Frequently Asked Questions

Smoker Temperature

I recommend 225 degrees for two hours to allow the smoky flavor to penetrate the potatoes. From there, I adjust the temperature to 350 degrees so the potatoes can cook and soften.

Cook Time/How Long to Cook

Sweet potatoes take a long time to cook. If you have ever baked sweet potatoes then you are used to them taking well over an hour to bake. Even my Air Fryer Sweet Potatoes typically take 40-50 minutes to cook and air fryers cook a lot faster than the oven.

Size matters! Larger sweet potatoes will take longer to cook. I typically smoke my sweet potatoes for 2 hours at 225 degrees and then for another 60-90 minutes at 350 degrees.

Ultimately, you need to cook them for however long it takes for them to soften when pierced with a knife or fork or reach an internal temperature of 205-212 degrees.

What Type of Wood/Pellets to Use

Hickory, oak, apple, cherry, and most fruit flavors will work great for the potatoes, along with Traeger's Signature blend.

How to Store Leftovers

You can store leftover sweet potatoes in the fridge for 3-4 days.

How to Reheat

You can reheat them in the microwave, stovetop, in an air fryer, or in the oven at 350 degrees until warm.

Ingredients
  

  • 2 sweet potatoes Mine weighed ¾ to 1 pound each
  • 1 teaspoon olive oil
  • 1 tablespoon butter
  • brown sugar or sweetener To taste.

Instructions
 

  • Preheat the smoker to 225 degrees.
  • Rub the olive oil onto both sides and poke holes all over the sweet potatoes.
  • Place the sweet potatoes on the smoker. Cook for 2 hours.
  • Adjust the temperature to 350 degrees. Cook until the sweet potatoes reach an internal temperature of 205-212 degrees and have a soft interior when poked.
  • Slice the sweet potatoes and open and add butter and brown sugar or sweetener.
