Look, sometimes you want pizza but you also want to eat it with a spoon. Enter: pizza soup. It’s comforting, cheesy, and tastes like your favorite slice without having to preheat a thing. I lean on pantry ingredients and simple steps so it works for real weeknights when you’re not trying to make everything from scratch. After years of developing dinner recipes that don’t disappoint, trust me when I say this one does not come out boring.

I am on a mission to turn all of my favorite foods into soup recipes. Eating your favorite take out foods as a soup is super convenient because the meal tastes even better the next day, is great for meal prep, and freezer friendly too.
Pizza Soup Ingredients
- Onions
- Bell Peppers
- Ground Beef, Ground Turkey, or Italian Sausage: I use organic, grass-finished beef, Italian Sausage, and pepperoni. You can also use ground turkey, ground sausage, ground chicken, or whatever you like. You can also make this a meatless soup if you wish.
- Italian Seasoning, Salt, and Pepper
- Pepperoni: My preference is uncured nitrate-free pepperoni. It's made without the added preservatives that come with most processed deli meat.
- Marinara or Pizza Sauce: You can use my Homemade Marinara Sauce Recipe here or grab any of your favorite store-bought sauce. Marinara sauce or pizza sauce will work. Marinara sauce is a lot thicker than pizza sauce since pizza sauce is meant to spread over crust. I prefer to use marinara in this recipe for that reason...because I like thick soup. Marinara sauce also typically has more flavor.
- Fire Roasted Tomatoes (canned)
- Broth
- Mozzarella Cheese

Frequently Asked Questions and Recipe Pro Tips
You can, but it’ll make the soup sweeter and a lot thicker. I like marinara or crushed tomatoes so the broth stays “soupy” and not just melted pizza in a pot.
Low-moisture mozzarella gives you the best melt and stretch, just like a classic pizza slice. If you really want that pull, grate it yourself, pre-shredded has anti-caking starches that stop the cheese from melting smoothly.
Nope, you can skip it or swap it. The pepperoni does add flavor because the oil renders into the broth, so if you skip it, add a splash of olive oil or some Italian sausage so you don’t lose that richness.
Yes, absolutely. Bell peppers, onions, mushrooms, spinach, and even olives work great. Sauté them with the aromatics so they soften and build flavor.
This is a great soup for leftovers and reheating. This dish can be reheated in the microwave or on the stove.
Leftovers can be stored tightly covered and sealed and stored in the fridge for 3-4 days.
You can freeze this soup. I like to use these freezer molds from Amazon. It allows you to freeze the soup in individual portions. Defrost overnight in the fridge.
