If you are a fan of Chicken Parmesan and seafood, you will absolutely love this dish. It's prepared just like my Air Fryer Chicken Parmesan recipe, but with shrimp. The recipe includes instructions on how to make this recipe using the oven or an air fryer.

What Type of Shrimp to Use

Shrimp can be found at the grocery store in a few different ways. There is raw, pre-cooked, raw and frozen, deveined, tails on, tails off, etc.

I never use pre-cooked shrimp. There is an obvious difference in taste due to the lack of quality. The shrimp is cooked and then frozen and you have to cook it/warm it up again. This usually overcooks the shrimp. Raw shrimp only takes minutes to make, just buy it raw.

Always look for deveined, that’s my preference. The black vein that runs along the back of the shrimp is the digestive intestinal tract. Is this shrimp poop, yes.

You can buy it with the vein and remove it using a sharp paring knife to make a slit along the back and lift out the vein with the tip of the knife. Check out tips on How to Peel and Devein Shrimp here.

How to Thaw Frozen Shrimp

Place the frozen shrimp in a large bowl of cold water. The shrimp will thaw within minutes and will be ready to peel.

Do You Leave the Tails on the Shrimp?

This is completely up to you and is a matter of preference. Often the tails are left on for presentation purposes only. The shrimp simply looks nicer and will have a nice curve to it when the tails are left on.

What Type of Breadcrumbs to Use

You can use standard breadcrumbs or panko breadcrumbs. Either will work in this recipe. To give the shrimp an Italian seasoned flavor, you can use Italian Seasoned Breadcrumbs or add a teaspoon of Italian Seasoning to your breadcrumbs.

What Type of Cheese to Use

You will need shredded mozzarella cheese and grated Parmesan for the recipe. The shrimp is coated in breadcrumbs and Parmesan. After it's breaded and cooked it's topped with melted mozzarella.

How to Make Shrimp Parmesan (Parmigiana)

  1. Set up a cooking station with 3 separate bowls large enough to dip the shrimp. Add flour to one bowl and a beaten egg to another.
  2. In the third bowl, combine breadcrumbs, Parmesan cheese, Italian Seasoning, salt, and pepper to taste in a bowl large enough to dip the shrimp. Stir to combine.
  3. Dip the shrimp in the flour, then the egg, and then the breadcrumbs mixture.
  4. Bake or air fry.
  5. Top the shrimp with marinara and mozzarella cheese.

How Long Will it Last in the Fridge/How to Store

The dish will last tightly stored and sealed in the fridge for 3-4 days.

How to Reheat

The best way to reheat is using the air fryer or the oven. If you use the microwave the shrimp will get soggy. Reheat in the air fryer or oven at 350 degrees until warm.

Freezer Tips

You can freeze leftovers tightly sealed and covered for up to 3-4 months. Defrost in the fridge overnight and follow the steps above to reheat.

Equipment

  • Cosori Air Fryer
  • Air Fryer Parchment Paper
  • Air Fryer Oil Spray Bottle
  • 9x13 Baking Dish

Ingredients

  • 1 pound raw shrimp Peeled and deveined.
  • ½ cup all-purpose flour
  • 1 egg Beaten. You may need an additional egg depending on the size of your shrimp.
  • ¾ cup breadcrumbs
  • ½ cup grated Parmesan cheese
  • 1 teaspoon Italian Seasoning
  • salt and pepper to taste
  • ½ cup shredded mozzarella cheese
  • 1 cup marinara sauce
  • cooking oil I use olive oil.

Instructions

  • Set up a cooking station with 3 separate bowls large enough to dip the shrimp. Add flour to one bowl and the beaten egg to another.
  • In the third bowl, combine the breadcrumbs, parmesan cheese, Italian Seasoning, salt, and pepper to taste in a bowl large enough to dip the shrimp. Stir to combine.
  • Dip the shrimp in the flour, then the egg, and then the breadcrumbs mixture.

Air Fryer Instructions

  • Place the shrimp in the air fryer. Spray the top of the shrimp with cooking oil.
  • Cook for 5 minutes on 400 degrees.
  • Open the air fryer and flip the shrimp. Cook for an additional 2-3 minutes or until crisp.
  • Top each of the shrimp with marinara sauce and then the shredded mozzarella. Air fry for an additional 2 minutes or until the cheese has melted.
(Alternatively, you can air fry the breaded shrimp to get them crispy and when finished, add marinara sauce to the bottom of a 9x13 baking dish. Top the sauce with the shrimp and mozzarella. Broil for 2 minutes or until the cheese has melted.)

Oven Instructions

  • Preheat oven to 400 degrees.
  • Spread the marinara sauce throughout the bottom of a 9x13 inch baking dish.
  • Top the sauce with the breaded shrimp. Spray the top of the shrimp with cooking oil.
  • Bake for 7 minutes. Open the oven and flip the shrimp and top it with mozzarella. Bake until the cheese has melted and the shrimp is cooked through.

Video

Notes

  • Most Italian Seasoning has garlic flavor. Feel free to add garlic powder (adjust to taste) if you wish.
  • You can use standard breadcrumbs or panko breadcrumbs. Either will work in this recipe. To give the shrimp an Italian seasoned flavor, you can use Italian Seasoned Breadcrumbs or add a teaspoon of Italian Seasoning to your breadcrumbs.
  • Use your judgment for cook time. I like for my shrimp to be extra crispy, so I keep a close watch and continue cooking until crisp.

Amazing! This recipe is quick and delicious. My husband who “doesn’t like shrimp” loved it. My daughter, who has never tried shrimp before, helped me bread the shrimp and loved the final results! My only regret is not making a double batch!

This is a delicious way to switch up the usual chicken parm! The recipe is so well written that I let my 9 year old pull this together. You can't go wrong with this one!

Shrimp and Pasta are my 2 favorite things so this was a must. Chicken Parm is great but this was 10x better and a great "something new" for my son and I to try to make together. We both agreed it will be going into our regular rotation which is 90% Brandi's recipes already lol thank you for making feeding my family so easy

Recipe was hit-ting! So good. I used the Italian seasoned bread crumbs I already had on hand and used the air fryer method. So delicious and my picky eaters enjoyed. So I will make again next week. Thank you!! 🙂

Ok I usually stay on top of reviews but I was skipping with this one.

This was delicious and easy. Plus the shrimp didn’t have that greasy taste because you can use the air fryer. I definitely suggest doubling the recipe if you have shrimp lovers in your house hold. We served this with Angel hair pasta and zoodles.

Definitely a great alternative to the traditional chicken parm. I LOVED it and had enough leftover for lunch for 2 days.

@staysnatched, I baked the shrimp instead of using the air fryer. Too much breading. As I was eating it I was wondering if the breading was cooked thoroughly. There also was not enough marinara. I had to add more after. I think maybe I should have fried them first THEN baked but I thought then they would be too oily. I wanted to love it like all the other reviews but I didn't . I wasted my time and money.

It sounds like you didn’t bake it long enough and/or you didn’t bread the shrimp properly. You should shake off any excess breading.

Excellent. Used air fryer method to cook and crisp the shrimp, and broil in the air fryer after laying the shrimp on the marinara sauce and covering with mozzarella. Heated extra marinara to serve with spaghetti. I make my own bread crumbs in a mini Cuisinart with leftover bread, which I keep in the freezer for recipes calling for breading. Quick and easy, my wife loved it. 😊
