I don’t play about flavor, even when it comes to fruit salad. Fruit salad don’t have to be boring or basic, and this one proves it. I’m tossing fresh, juicy fruit with a simple honey lime dressing that brings everything to life, sweet, a little tangy, and super refreshing. People trust me to provide recipes that always bring the flavor, and this is one of those go-to bowls that always hits.

Fruit Salad Ingredients

When you’re building a fruit salad, don’t overthink it, just keep a few things in mind. Mix up the colors so it actually looks good on the plate, because we eat with our eyes first. Some fruits are naturally sweeter than others, so taste as you go and adjust your honey or sugar if you need to. You also want a mix of textures, nothing worse than a bowl full of mush, so pick fruits that can hold their shape. And if you can, lean into what’s in season, the flavor is just better and you’ll notice the difference.
Here are some options:

  • Apples
  • Bananas
  • Berries
  • Citrus fruits (oranges, grapefruit, lemons)
  • Grapes
  • Kiwis
  • Mangoes
  • Melons (cantaloupe, honeydew, watermelon)
  • Nectarines
  • Peaches
  • Pears
  • Pineapple
  • Plums
  • Strawberries

Fruit Salad with Honey Dressing

Brandi Crawford
I’ve been sharing recipes online for over a decade, and I’ve learned that simple doesn’t have to mean boring. This fruit salad is a go-to because it’s fresh, reliable, and way more flavorful than anything store-bought. I don’t do bland or boring—and this recipe proves that something as simple as fruit salad can still be packed with flavor and totally worth making from scratch.

Ingredients

  • 2 cups sliced strawberries
  • 1 cup pineapple chunks
  • 1 cup sliced kiwi This was 3 kiwis for me.
  • 1 cup blueberries
  • 1 cup mandarin oranges This was 3-4 mandarin oranges for me.

Honey Lime Dressing

  • ¼-1/2 cup honey Start with ¼ cup and add more to suit your taste.
  • 2 tablespoons fresh lime juice This was 1 large lime for me.
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil See notes.
  • 1 teaspoon fresh lime zest See notes.

Instructions

  • Add all of the fruit to a large bowl.
  • Combine the dressing in a separate bowl. Taste the dressing repeatedly and make adjustments as necessary. Drizzle the dressing over the fruit.
  • Serve immediately or chilled for 30 minutes.

Notes

I used fresh fruit in this recipe.
Olive oil is used because it will smooth out the dressing and make it easier to coat the fruit. You will taste some hints of the oil. Omit it if you wish.
Lime zest is used to amplify the lime flavor. I recommend you start with a small amount of zest, taste the dressing, and then continue to add and build more in order to ensure the dressing suits your taste.
Feel free to add more dressing to the salad to suit your taste and desired texture.
You can use any of your favorite fruit in this salad.
Keep in mind some fruits, such as bananas and apples, tend to brown quickly when cut and exposed to air. Because the fruit is served with dressing, the longer you take to eat it, the more risk you have the fruit will get soggy. I like to drain excess dressing for this reason. Once you coat the fruit in dressing and refrigerate for 30 minutes, it will soak up the honey lime flavor.

Frequently Asked Questions and Pro Tips

Can I use frozen fruit?

I love to make fruit salads year-round. Some of my favorites aren't fresh or in season during certain parts of the year (mostly mango and peaches!). These can be purchased frozen and thawed for the salad.f

How to I prevent the fruit from browning?

The lime juice used in the dressing will prevent the fruit from browning. Lime juice is acidic, and it reacts with the enzymes that cause oxidation. Oxidation is a chemical reaction that causes fruit to turn brown. When you coat fruit with lime juice, you are essentially stopping the oxidation process in its tracks.

Lemon juice and vinegar will do the same thing.

Does the salad have to be chilled?

Chill the fruit salad: For the best taste and texture, chill the fruit salad in the refrigerator for at least 30 minutes before serving.

How long will the salad last? What's the best way to store fruit salad?

It will last 3-5 days in the refrigerator. But, it is best to eat it within 24 hours of making it. If you store the fruit salad in an airtight container, it will last longer. Avoid leaving the fruit salad at room temperature for more than two hours, as bacteria can grow rapidly at warm temperatures.

If you store the salad in an airtight container with paper towels, it will last longer.

What type of salad dressing works best?

My Honey Lime Dressing is my favorite addition to this salad! The dressing adds a natural sweetness, the lime juice provides a bright and zesty flavor that balances perfectly with the fruit. Here are more options:
Citrus dressing: Anything with fresh orange, lemon, or lime juice is gonna wake that whole salad up. It’s bright, fresh, and works with pretty much any fruit you throw in.
Yogurt dressing: If you want it creamy, this is it. It’s smooth, a little tangy, and perfect with berries, melons, and apples.
Mint dressing: Super fresh and cooling. This one hits especially good with tropical fruits like pineapple, mango, and papaya.
Poppy seed dressing: Sweet with a little tang. This is a classic for strawberries, blueberries, and mandarins.
Balsamic dressing: That tangy, slightly sweet vibe pairs really well with peaches, nectarines, and strawberries. It just works.

What's the best way to prep the fruit?

Cut the fruit into bite-sized pieces: Cut the fruit into pieces that are roughly the same size so that they are easy to eat and blend well together. Remove any seeds, stems, or tough parts.
