Key Ingredients

  • Milk or Chocolate Milk – This is the base of the Frosty, giving it creaminess and a smooth, drinkable texture. Using chocolate milk enhances the cocoa flavor without needing extra chocolate syrup or cocoa powder. I never have chocolate milk at home, so I used regular milk and a couple of ingredients (noted below) to get chocolate flavor.
    • Whole milk is the best choice for a rich, creamy texture like the original.
    • 2%, skim milk, almond milk, and coconut milk will also work, but the Frosty will be thinner and less creamy.
  • Chocolate Syrup – If using regular milk, chocolate syrup adds that classic chocolatey taste while also sweetening the mixture. It blends easily for a smooth consistency.
  • Unsweetened Cocoa Powder – Cocoa powder provides a deep, rich chocolate flavor without extra sweetness.
  • Sweetener or Sugar – Since Wendy’s Frosty has a lightly sweet taste, adding sugar or a sugar substitute ensures the perfect balance of sweetness without overpowering the chocolate. I use monkfruit sweetener because it's zero calorie.
  • Whipped Cream or Cool Whip – This is the key to the Frosty’s signature texture! It adds lightness and fluffiness, making the mixture thicker and creamier, just like the original. Cool Whip is a great shortcut because it stabilizes the Frosty while giving it that iconic soft-serve consistency.

How it Tastes

The Wendy’s Chocolate Frosty has a creamy, smooth, and slightly airy texture, falling somewhere between soft-serve ice cream and a thick milkshake. It’s rich and chocolatey, but with a subtle malted flavor that gives it a distinct taste compared to regular chocolate shakes. It’s not overly sweet.

How to Make Wendy's Frosty in the Ninja Slushi Machine

Detailed measurements and full instructions can be found in the recipe card at the bottom of this post.

  1. In a large mixing pitcher or bowl, whisk together the cocoa powder and granulated sugar to break up any clumps. Pour in the whole milk and chocolate syrup, then whisk until fully combined.
  2. Gently fold in the whipped topping until the mixture is smooth and creamy.
  3. Pour the Frosty mixture into your Ninja Slushi or preferred ice cream maker and process according to the machine’s instructions until thick and creamy. Press milkshake for the Ninja Slushi.
  4. Allow the machine to process. Let the machine run for 15-45 minutes, depending on the sugar content and temperature of the liquid. Mine took 20 minutes.
  5. Once the cycle is complete, place a cup under the self-serve spout and pull the handle to dispense the slushi.

Troubleshooting Tips if You Have Problems with the Machine

  • Check the Liquid Ratio – If the mixture is too thick, the machine may struggle to process it. Try adding 1-2 tablespoons of additional liquid (sparkling water, juice, or even plain water) and restart the cycle.
  • Make Sure the Mixture is Cold Enough – The machine works best when the liquid is super cold. If your base wasn’t chilled before adding it to the machine, try refrigerating or briefly freezing it before processing.
  • Let It Process Fully – The Ninja Slushi Machine may take a few minutes to reach the right consistency. Be patient and let it complete the cycle. If needed, restart the process.
  • Check for Ice Blockage – If the mixture is freezing unevenly, it may be too cold or concentrated in one area. Let it sit for a minute, give it a gentle stir, and try again.
  • Ensure the Machine is Properly Assembled – Double-check that all parts (including the lid and paddle) are locked into place. If something is misaligned, the machine may not operate correctly.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

Can I make this without a Ninja Slushi Maker?

Yes! A high-powered blender or an ice cream maker works too—just blend until thick and creamy. You will need to use a lot of ice and taste the drink to decide if you need to add more of the ingredients for flavor.

How do I make the Frosty thicker?

Use less liquid, add more whipped cream or Cool Whip, or freeze the mixture for 20-30 minutes before serving.

Can I make this dairy-free?

Yes! Use almond, oat, coconut, or cashew milk and swap Cool Whip for coconut whipped cream.

Do I have to use chocolate milk?

No. I actually do not use chocolate milk. I like to create my own mixture because that will also save calories and excess sugar. You can use regular milk and add chocolate syrup or cocoa powder for the chocolate flavor.

How sweet is this compared to the original Frosty?

The great thing about making your own is you get to decide. You can adjust the sweetness by adding more or less sugar/sweetener to match your preference.

Can I make this ahead of time?

Yes! Store it in the freezer and let it sit for a few minutes before stirring or blending to get the right consistency.

How can I make a vanilla Frosty?

Skip the chocolate and add vanilla extract, 1-2 teaspoons.

Can I turn this into a protein shake?

Yes! Add a scoop of chocolate or vanilla protein powder to make a Frosty-style protein shake.

How to Store

You can store leftovers in the machine, but you need to keep the machine running to maintain the frozen texture for up to 12 hours. If you turn it off, the Frosty will melt. You can also pour the milkshake into a freezer-safe container and freeze. When ready to enjoy, let it sit at room temperature for 10-15 minutes, then stir or blend again for a smooth consistency.

Equipment

  • Ninja Slushi Frozen Drink Machine

Ingredients

  • 4 cups milk or chocolate milk
  • ¼ cup chocolate syrup Omit if using chocolate milk.
  • 2 tablespoons unsweetened cocoa powder Omit if using chocolate milk.
  • ½ cup sweetener or sugar Adjust to suit your taste. Start with ½ cup and add from there.
  • 4 oz whipped cream or cool whip This is about 2 cups for me.

Instructions

  • In a large mixing pitcher or bowl, whisk together the cocoa powder and granulated sugar to break up any clumps. Pour in the milk and chocolate syrup, then whisk until fully combined.
  • Gently fold in the whipped topping until the mixture is smooth and creamy.
  • Pour the Frosty mixture into your Ninja Slushi or preferred ice cream maker and process according to the machine’s instructions until thick and creamy. Press milkshake for the Ninja Slushi.

  • Once the cycle is complete, place a cup under the self-serve spout and pull the handle to dispense the Frosty.

Notes

I love to add a teaspoon or two of vanilla extract. It really takes it the next level.
Whole milk is the best choice for a rich, creamy texture like the original. 2%, skim milk, almond milk, and coconut milk will also work, but the Frosty will be thinner and less creamy.
How to Make This Using a Blender
You will need to use ice for thick texture. Just use a high-powered blender and blend until smooth. If the mixture is too thick, add more liquid a little at a time. If the mixture isn't thick enough, add ice and blend.
Troubleshooting Tips if You Have Problems With the Machine
Check the Liquid Ratio – If the mixture is too thick, the machine may struggle to process it. Try adding 1-2 tablespoons of additional liquid (sparkling water, juice, or even plain water) and restart the cycle.
