Yep, I use fresh mint, real limes, that perfect icy texture… it’s giving patio, it’s giving girls’ night, it’s giving “I deserve this.”

Ninja Slushi Mojito Ingredients

  • Rum: White rum is the traditional choice because it keeps the drink bright, clean, and refreshing. It doesn’t overpower the mint and lime, and it blends smoothly into that icy slush texture. Any rum you like will work in the recipe.
  • Fresh Mint Leaves: A mojito should smell minty the moment you pick up the glass. Fresh mint brings that clean, crisp fragrance that makes the whole drink taste fresher.
  • Sugar or Sweetener
  • Limes/Lime Juice
  • Water
A countertop setup with a Ninja slushi machine in the background and mojito ingredients arranged in front: two empty glass jars, a measuring cup filled with water, two whole limes, a bunch of fresh mint, and a small jar of sugar.

Can I Make This With a Regular Blender

Yes, but you will need to add a lot of ice to get that thick texture, which may cause you to adjust the ratio of sugar/sweetener and/or lime juice. You will have to adjust to taste and what works for you.

How to Fix Error Messages Related to Alcohol

If you’ve ever tried whipping up a margarita, piña colada, or any frozen cocktail in your Ninja Slushi machine and ended up staring at an error message, or worse, a sad, watery mess. Trust me, I’ve been there. I went through all the trial and error so you don’t have to. Here’s the real reason it happens (and how to fix it).

  • Alcohol and Freezing Don’t Mix Well – Alcohol doesn’t freeze like water, so if your drink is too strong, the machine can’t do its job. Too much liquor = no slush. The machine will either skip the shave or refuse to dispense altogether.
  • Your Ratios Are Off – The Ninja Slushi needs balance. You’ve got to have the right mix of alcohol and water-based liquid. Too little liquid, and you’ll be scraping ice chunks. Too much, and it’ll pour out like a cocktail instead of a slushie.
  • Thick Mixers Can Mess Things Up – Heavy juices, creamy ingredients, or thick syrups can slow the machine down and make your texture clumpy or uneven. Go lighter with those or mix them in after blending.
  • Don’t Overfill It – There’s a reason the machine has fill lines, y’all. If you go over that max line, it’s going to struggle to freeze and dispense properly. Keep it in range for the perfect slush every time.

How to Make Cocktails Without Any Errors in the Ninja Slushi Machine

If your drink is too boozy, the Ninja Slushi machine is gonna let you know. You’ll see the temperature lights start flashing one by one from the bottom up, the preset buttons blinking like crazy, and then it’ll start beeping at you every minute for 15 minutes. That’s your cue to cool it on the alcohol and add a splash of something lighter like water or sparkling water to balance things out.

  • Keep It at 1–1.5 oz Alcohol per Serving – Anything more, and your drink won’t freeze up right.
  • Add a Little Extra Liquid – Water, juice, or mixer helps it blend smooth and thick instead of icy or runny.
  • Start with Cold Ingredients – Pre-chilled liquids help the mix freeze faster and stay slushy longer.
  • Go Easy on Thick Syrups or Creamy Stuff – If you use them, thin them out with water or juice so the machine doesn’t struggle.
  • Respect the Fill Line (64 oz Max) – Overfilling just throws everything off. Stay in that sweet spot for the perfect pour every time.

How to Make Ninja Slushi Mojito

Detailed measurements and full instructions can be found in the recipe card at the bottom of this post.

  1. Add your mint leaves and sugar or sweetener to the bottom of the glass: Use fresh, clean leaves, no brown spots. Leave the stems out if you can.
  2. Use a muddler (or the end of a wooden spoon) to gently press. Place the muddler or spoon on top of the mint and give it a slow, firm press. Continue to press and muddle. Once you can really smell that fresh mint aroma, you’re done.
  3. Create a mint simple syrup. Add ½ cup of water to the mixture and stir until the sugar or sweetener has fully dissolved. You can also do this on the stove in a saucepan on low heat. I didn't find it necessary to do so.
  4. Strain the mixture. Use a mesh strainer or cheese cloth to strain the mint leave. I pour the simple syrup directly into the rum I'm using for the recipe. Add the lime juice here as well. Stir to combine.
  5. Load up the Ninja Slushi. Add the rum mixture and additional water to the Ninja Slushi. Be sure not to exceed 64oz. Prepare the drink in batches if necessary. Power on the machine and press Spiked Slush.
  6. Prepare the slushi. Allow the machine to churn and freeze the mixture until the machine beeps to signal the cycle is finished. You can adjust the thickness of the mixture using the side panel. The drink should take 20-45 minutes. Mine took 25 minutes.
  7. Serve. Pull the lever on the spout to dispense the drink. Serve.

Variations and Substitutions

  • Swap white rum for coconut rum
  • Use flavored white rum (lime, mango, or pineapple)
  • Replace rum with sparkling water for a mocktail
  • Add fresh berries (strawberries, raspberries, blueberries) These will need to be blended in a blender first before adding to the Ninja Slushi.
  • Use pineapple juice or mango nectar for a tropical twist
  • Add cucumber slices for a spa-style mojito
  • Use brown sugar instead of white sugar
  • Add a splash of club soda after blending
  • Swap lime for lemon for a different citrus profile
  • Add a little ginger beer for a spicy variation

Frequently Asked Questions and Recipe Pro Tips

Do I have to muddle the mint first?

You don’t have to, but muddling gives you a stronger mint flavor. It would be hard to get the leaves into the slushi and even then, the texture of the drink would be gritty.

What type of rum works best?

I stick with white rum. It keeps the drink crisp, clean, and refreshing. Spiced or aged rums can work, but they’ll change the classic mojito flavor.

Can I make it without alcohol?

Absolutely. Swap the rum for extra lime juice and a splash of club soda or sparkling water. It still tastes bright and refreshing.

Can I adjust the sweetness?

For sure. Add more sugar or sweetener f you want it sweeter, or cut it back for a tarter mojito. Blend, taste, and tweak.

Can I use bottled lime juice instead of fresh?

Fresh lime juice hits different, but bottled works in a pinch. Just choose a good-quality one, not the neon green kind.

Can I use mint extract instead of fresh mint?

Probably. I haven't tested it so I don't have any recommendations here.

Can I make a big batch for a party?

Yes! Just multiply the ingredients and blend in batches. Keep each batch in the freezer for a few minutes so everything stays icy.

How do I keep the slushi from melting too fast?

Serve it immediately and keep the machine running for future batches/drinks.

  • ¾ cup rum
  • ½ cup lime juice This was 4 small limes for me.
  • 3 cups water Divided into ½ cup and 2 ½ cups

Instructions

  • Add your mint leaves and sugar or sweetener to the bottom of the glass: Use fresh, clean leaves, no brown spots. Leave the stems out if you can.

Notes

I use monkfruit instead of refined sugar. Standard refined table sugar still works in this recipe.
