Why You Will Love This Recipe

  • Refreshing and Hydrating: Watermelon is naturally hydrating due to its high water content, making it an excellent choice for staying hydrated, especially during hot weather or after physical activity.
  • Natural Flavor: This water provides a naturally sweet and refreshing flavor without added sugars or artificial ingredients. It's a healthier alternative to many store-bought drinks.
  • Nutrient-Rich: Watermelon is rich in essential nutrients like vitamins A and C, as well as antioxidants, which may have various health benefits, including supporting heart health and reducing inflammation.
  • Low in Calories: Watermelon water is low in calories, making it a great option for those watching their calorie intake or trying to maintain a healthy weight.

What Type of Watermelon to Use

It's best to choose a watermelon that is ripe, sweet, and juicy. I don't wait until summer to make this. I make it year round using the pre-cut watermelon sold at my local grocer. Here are some tips for picking the perfect one:

  • Look for a watermelon that feels heavy for its size and has a uniform shape without any soft spots or bruises. The rind should be firm and free of blemishes. A ripe watermelon will have a hollow sound when tapped.
  • Give the watermelon a sniff - a ripe watermelon should have a sweet, slightly fruity aroma at the stem end.
  • They come in various flesh colors, including red, pink, and yellow. Any of these varieties can be used, but choose one with vibrant, juicy flesh for the best flavor.

Do You Have to Remove the Seeds?

I typically buy seedless watermelon, so it just has the white seeds. I don't remove these because you will strain the mixture to remove the pulp to create smooth water. The seeds get strained out during this process.

How to Make it Without a Blender

A blender is the easiest and quickest way. Here are more methods:

  • Muddling: Crush the watermelon to release its juices. You can use a muddler, pestle, or even a sturdy spoon. Start by cutting the watermelon into small cubes or chunks. Place the pieces in a bowl or pitcher and use your chosen tool to gently press and crush the fruit until it releases its juice. Strain it from there.
  • Hand Squeezing: This is more labor-intensive. Cut the watermelon into small pieces and place them in a bowl or pitcher. Use your hands to squeeze and press the watermelon pieces, releasing the juice. Strain it from there.

How to Make it Sweet

I love the taste so I don't add anything. Feel free to add sweetener or sugar to yours if you are looking for a sweet drink. Taste repeatedly and make adjustments to suit your taste.

Substitutions and Ways to Add More Flavor

  • Sparkling Water
  • Lemon
  • Lime
  • Fresh Mint
  • Fresh Basil
  • Fresh Rosemary
  • Cucumbers
  • Ginger
  • Strawberries
  • Pineapple
  • Mango
  • Jalapeno
  • Honey
  • Maple Syrup
  • Alcohol

How to Store/How Long it Will Last

Store any leftover water in a pitcher, container, or bottle with a lid in the fridge. Seal the container tightly to prevent exposure to air, which can cause the watermelon water to spoil more quickly.

Over time, the water will naturally separate, with the juice settling at the bottom and water rising to the top (this can happen as early as an hour or two after storing). Before serving, gently shake or stir the container to redistribute the contents and blend the flavors back together.

It can be stored in the refrigerator for up to 3-4 days. However, its freshness and flavor may start to decline after the first day or two. It's best to consume it as soon as possible for the best taste and quality.

How to Use the Leftover Pulp

You can use the leftover pulp to make smoothies, salsa, or as a topping on salads. You don't have to discard it if you wish to repurpose it.
