It is actually super easy! The full process of cooking hard boiled eggs on the stove can take around 20 minutes.

The Instant Pot won’t save you a TON of time. I saved about 10 minutes. It will aid in making sure your hard eggs come out perfectly.

Hard-boiled eggs can be difficult to make because we either overcook them or do not cook them long enough. The method I outline in this post is tried and true. No more crossing my fingers and hoping the eggs turned out ok!

How to Make Instant Pot Hard Boiled Eggs

Detailed measurements and full instructions can be found in the recipe card at the bottom of this post.

  1. Insert the metal rack that came with the Instant Pot inside the base.
  2. Add 1 cup of water to the pot.
  3. Place your eggs in the pot.
  4. Place the lid on the Instant Pot and seal.
  5. Pressure cook.
  6. Remove the eggs from the pot with tongs.
  7. Place the eggs in a bowl of cold water until cool.
  8. Peel.

Ice Bath

Whenever you cook hard boiled eggs, you should submerge them in cold water after cooking. Here are a few reasons why:

  • Rapid cooling: Placing the eggs in an ice bath immediately after cooking helps halt the cooking process and rapidly cools them down. This prevents overcooking, which can lead to rubbery egg whites and greyish yolks.
  • Easy peeling: The rapid cooling caused by the ice bath creates a temperature differential between the egg whites and the shell. This temperature difference helps to separate the egg white from the shell membrane, making the eggs easier to peel.
  • Preserving texture: Cooling the eggs quickly helps maintain their desired texture. If eggs are allowed to continue cooking in their residual heat, they may become tougher or develop an undesired texture.

I only leave them in for 2 minutes for the soft hard boiled eggs, with our pot we can cook 24 at one time.

Doing regular hard boiled eggs I add white vinegar to the water. Would this be any advantage to helping them peel easier with the Instant Pot version?

I've never done this. I find them easy to peel without doing it.

I have cooked hard boiled eggs (X-Large) from Costco using the instapot for 5 minute setting. I cooked 14 using the 2-tiered egg rack from Amazon (as you displayed). I added 1.5 cups of water only. Many of my eggs cracked. It's fine if I want to peel them right away, but I like to keep the eggs whole and take them to work. Any suggestions regarding the number of eggs that crack? Anyway of preventing this?

Hi there! I typically crack mine immediately and store in tightly sealed bags. Any reason you don't like to crack immediately?
